Very personal service. Small but well considered selection of real ales.

One evening I was weary after shopping, and arrived dying for a drink outside the door. I had to wait 5mins after opening time, but then the landlord arrived, apologising that he had been held up by the traffic. Knowing Newbury, I was entirely sympathetic. Once inside, the choice of three well-kept real ales, served directly from the cooled cask, and a pork pie, soon revived me. And as a CAMRA member I got a discount on his very reasonable prices as well. By the time I left, it was almost full - but there always seems room for more! Everything good you have heard about this place is correct. Pity its opening hours aren't longer!

Small but perfectly formed bar for ale drinkers.

Don't tell anyone about this tiny place. It's a bit like a fifth year common room. But with beer. The bar man reads the paper if you don't engage him on conversation. And there is no till. He writes down all purchases in a book. See you there on Thursday. But don't, whatever you chuffing do, spread the word.

Wonderful "cosy" pub :) Great beers that are different everything you visit and always in great condition. Don't want to tell too many people about it as they I won't be able to get in! Ian the landlord has set up a gem of a place.
